Bookmarks widget

I just wanted to say thank you for the 'widget', as today I realised not only that it 'pretty's up' my user page, but that it is in fact extremely useful to me. The reason being, I am currently in the process of uploading lyrics I have transcribed myself and since these lyrics have not existed on any site before now, they aren't on here. As such, they show in red on my widget. I click on the title and hey presto! I am immediately provided with a song page without having to go through the process of creating one. This will save me one hell of a lot of time and effort! So thanks again.  ♫Яєdxx Actions Words 10:03, 21 April 2008 (EDT)

Oh... yay for upgrades :P
If you get a chance to look at this, hopefully it's quick. If you're bogged down w/other stuff, just let me know and I'll stab at it.

It turned out to be super-easy to fix: just had to change the require_once to point to where they moved the file to :) So it's all fixed now... one less thing to worry about! :) -Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 16:43, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Janitor & Artist templates

Hi Teknomunk....Thanks for updating Janitor to use the new Artist Header & Footer templates. Looks like soon we will be able to retire the obsolete Hometown template for good. cheers ∃cho⚡ierr∀ ( ) 20:54, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Song called 'Shipwreck' blocked as spam

Hi, I'm trying to include a song called Shipwreck, but the spam filter blocks the title... There are people selling shipwrecks out there really? :)
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs).

It's definitely not the title: User:LWChris/Sandbox (elsewise you musn't have written the word here then, either) - Chris 18:46, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

There has been some discussion...

I was wondering about the __NOBOT__ tag. I was under the impression that this works (at least as long as the bot is not EchoSierra's). Is that true? I ask because there are some pages that I need protected from Janitor's 'redirect to direct' task.
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 05:41, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

(observation) Only sysops can delete pages, now if a bot is used to delete pages, in the future the bot will switch to sysop account to do an edit if no other exception stopped it from the edit.
All Teknomunk has to do, imho, is to tell Janitor to exclude anything but album/artist/song pages, so talk & template & sandbox etc. would not get edited.
Everything that Janitor recently edited that shouldn't have been, are on Special Link to redirects (a lot of them pages in King's and my sandbox). Maybe King recalls back when S2E2 edited a protected template and we both had a furious flap ;) hth ∃cho⚡ierr∀ ( ) 06:34, 20 April 2009 (UTC) There is no Spoon__NO SYSOP__ flag
So does the __NOBOT__ tag work or not ES? Only I've still got it on my pages.. Яєdxx Actions Words 07:01, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I do remember, but I am banking on the idea that your bots are different, programatically. However, it looks like the NOBOT tag is more of a superstitious endeavour of mine...But I want to know: Does this NOBOT even exist, or is it just a myth that has gotten passed around? I don't even remember where I first heard of it...
King_Nee1114 (talk pagecontributionsdeletions) 08:07, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Rfl. Now you tell me ;)  Яєdxx Actions Words 08:40, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't have access to my bot at the moment, but I believe by the time I finished, I added support for the __NOBOT__ tag to the link to direct script. I have just recently started work on the code for Janitor recently and am probably going to be doing more in the near future (I have discovered a few tricks to try and speed things up and want to apply them to all my other scripts)
We should probably formalize the __NOBOT__ tag and make a requirement for bots to respect this tag.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 14:58, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Excellent stuff with the redirect links tek! Oh and this might help. (Rainbow Dragon found it. I couldn't).  Яєdxx Actions Words 15:02, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
No Bot is part of the www definition to stop search engine spiders/bots from trying to index things deemed off limits to bots.
Thanks to Teknomunk for resolving the long standing issue of links to redirects which also resolved our orphan pages in oblivion.
From Janitor's recent edits, it seems he has no problem editing large pages (>100KB), which is good news.
I put the __NO BOT__ flag on the pages listing artists & artist redirects in my sandbox.... ∃cho⚡ierr∀ ( ) 21:22, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Wonderful! Thank you for the clarifications.

Wikify: technical restrictions

I noticed that the Wikify-tool doesn't convert #, < and the []s into "Number", "Less than" and ()s.--KaputteMenschen 12:11, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately it can't, as it would have to interpret what the meaning of the symbol should be. For example, while most of the time, > is "greater than", when used with a dash as -> it is then an arrow and could mean "to" or something else. There's also another song, as I recall, that uses the # symbol within a string of other symbols to represent a censored curse word, as in the comics. It would be a bit weird for the pagename to be "!$&Number@*" Some things just need a "personal touch" and the occasion for such a thing is fairly small when compared to the incredible number of pages that we have. On the other hand, [] should probably be automatically turned into (), though.
Hope this helps.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   03:17, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Not to mention C#… Maybe it would be a good idea to add a message to the page warning users to check the results (possibly with a list of known bugs). — 6x9 (Talk) 12:48, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I know, all this seems weird (i.e. !$&Number@*), but that's (unfortunately) the page naming policy. Also, if you just leave (for example) !$&#@* the way it is, the page !$& would open up.
I personally think that this kind of weird looking is ok, as long as it's only in the page URL, not in the page title itself (which is currently not possible due to technical restrictions. I already spammed Sean a bit about this).--KaputteMenschen 12:18, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually, the policy is to "replace it (i.e. the character) by a suitable equivalent"; the "full list" below isn't quite as full as it should be (it's near impossible to predict all eventualities). "CNumber " (including the space) is most certainly not a suitable equivalent for "C#", and neither is "!$&Number @*" (the space, again) for "!$&#@*". I'll bring this matter up on the LW:PN talk page. — 6x9 (Talk) 13:54, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

tek, when you got a mo could you have a look at what Kiefer's written on my talk page please. Thank you!  Яєdxx Actions Words 21:40, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

So can I assume that we can't actually use it because it makes pages invisible to api?  Яєdxx Actions Words 14:52, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Two quick things

  1. Is it easy to make Janitor's replacement on the links to redirect do a s/_/ /g; so that all of the links end up with spaces instead of underscores?
  2. Do you have any thoughts on testing SMW?

If you have a few minutes, I'd love your input. If not, no sweat :)

Janitor doesn't pay attention to locales behind file-names (=translation): Jenniffer Kae - the "Other songs" are user created translations - so they're usually not to be listed, are they? - Chris 07:03, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, that is not supposed to happen...:( I'll add a case to exclude those so that this won't happen again.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 17:45, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
You could Janitor let go trough the artist's pages and remove all "/lang"-fitting-songs listed below "Other songs" - Chris 18:44, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Could I impose upon your translation skills?

I've got a great little program that I found for viewing images, but it is in Japanese. Some of it I've been able to figure out, but the Options menu is still a black box to me. Could I send you a couple of screenshots, and you translate them for me?

Song of The Day

Hi tek, considering the effort this guy seems to have gone to, I was just wondering if you could tell me why you removed his nomination? [4] Is it because it is too lengthy? Thanks!  Яєdxx Actions Words 10:57, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Woah! I have no idea. I am not sure how I missed that...anyways, I've restored it.

Lol I didn't know it was a mistake. As it was you, I thought there must be a reason that I just couldn't see. Thanks for sorting it. :-)  Яєdxx Actions Words 22:46, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

tek, is there anything you can do to fix the above? Meaning the apostrophe/capitalisation problem and now the allmusic problem? Everytime I try to get it to do tracklist from allmusic I simply get the "found 16 but biggest track number is 17" error message example. It's getting rather frustrating because I really only use the allmusic tracklist for albums that aren't listed anywhere else. Thanks.  Яєdxx Actions Words 11:43, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Finding obscure lyrics with the help of the community

hi, I'm desperately looking for lyrics of the band Estampie. Is there any way to reach out to the community and ask if anybody might have some? I'm sure there are quite a few lyric enthusiasts amongst us who can find what google can't ;)

Chymæra 13:04, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry tek, I didn't know Chymæra had posted on your talk page as well. I answered this on Will's.  Яєdxx Actions Words 02:24, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

API vs. slashes

See [5], "Bongo Fury (1975)", about one third down: clicking any of the song links with "Zappa/Beefheart/Mothers" prefix produces a 404. Oh, and the album itself still links to "Frank Zappa:Bongo Fury (1975)", though it should go to "Zappa/Beefheart/Mothers:Bongo Fury (1975)" as well. No 404s on this page though… — 6×9 (Talk) 02:42, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Songs in multiple languages

(This is an answer to User_talk:LWChris#Songs in multiple languages)

Well, I wasn't quite pleased with your templates, though, because they are not showing what language the songs in the template are (see at Enrique Iglesias:Hero) - it's shown which language is displayed currently (well, usually I already see that from the lyrics themselves *g*), but not what languages the other lyrics are (in my example "es"). Any idea? - Chris 18:34, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Nothing wrong with the template – it's just that the "Lang2" parameter wasn't provided in the example you gave. — 6×9 (Talk) 18:47, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I see - well, I just read something from "apiLang1" and stuff, maybe I didn't quite get the point then. TY anyway for explaining - Chris 23:49, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Specifically, there are two concepts, one, LangN tells the template the language and adds it in (), the second apiLangN is only for api clients and screen-scrappers to determine the language when the pagename already has this information in it, for example:
apiLangN does nothing but declare the language of a particular title.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 23:57, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Could it be your BOT mixed up "Multiple Language" and "Translated Song"? Blur:Song 2 (German) This song wasn't released in German, but translated - I think now it's becoming clear why a better separation was/is needed xD - Chris 06:22, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
That was my mistake, actually. The only bot interaction for the Multiple Languages stuff was to replace templates so that the new template could be moved into {{Multiple Languages}} without breaking anything.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 16:49, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
OK, so now have a human-controlled review on all pages in Category "ML"??? Man, this is gonna be SOME nice work :D - btw, could you vote for the template and maybe make an Editor's Corner article promoting to vote for future changes? :) - Chris 12:49, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Two problem cases: Here it fixed an already correct link, while the real offender was at the bottom of the page in the {{RelatedArtists}} template. And here it seems Janitor alternatively fixed the link to the artist page ("The") and the album page ("His")… Could you make Janitor "remember" which pages it edited per run, and just log those pages it comes across more than once? — 6×9 (Talk) 23:55, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

What did you do?!

Non Latin alphabets

tek, when you've got a minute I would be grateful if you could solve a problem that me and Chris are experiencing with the above, which halts our progress when bot-editing. Please see the last two posts on Aqua's talk page about this. I encouraged Chris to get a bot since we have lost a few but I can't help him resolve this because I don't know myself. Thanks!  Яєdxx Actions Words 23:11, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

How complicated is Janitor?

I am not sure how complicated it is, but recently I had an idea about maybe how to help people a lot to avoid things like "added 200 orphaned songs". This is what I mean:

    {Redirect <NameOfLonelyPage> to FirstLettersUpperCase(<NameOfLonelyPage>)}
    {Move <NameOfLonelyPage> to FirstLettersUpperCase(<NameOfLonelyPage>)}
    {Redirect <NameOfLonelyPage> to FirstLettersUpperCase(<NameOfLonelyPage>)}

That tidies up a lot. I think 50% of the LonelyPages are due to mistakes during capitalisation. - Chris 04:52, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

I've implemented most of this (I don't have it redirecting pages, but it doesn't/shouldn't) add them to the Other Songs list now.
- teknomunk (talk,E,,A) 23:26, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Cool! Now it's just a matter of a new Nickname to get old Janitor back to work. - Chris 12:40, September 20, 2009 (UTC)
