Another question

Hey, sorry if I've been coming to your talk page too often, but I have a question. How can I rename myself? I...kinda don't want this username anymore, and I'd rather be Nicolas-1223. Could you tell me how to do it properly? Yesterday I tried renaming my userpage but it erases all my info (contribs, avatar, etc.), so I had to move it back to XxTimberlakexx. I'd rather you explain it to me than do it yourself. :P XxTimberlakexx (talk) 18:26, September 3, 2012 (UTC)

Hi Nic,
renaming in MediaWikis is very expensive regarding server's CPU time, which is why they don't do it very often as far as I know. See WP:RENAME on Wikipedia for more details. - Chris 21:39, September 3, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Need your help

Hey, Chris, sorry it took so long to respond. I'd love to help manage SOTD with you. I've already cleared out a few with unsuitable reasons. --Cubs Fan2007 (Talk to me) 01:38, September 11, 2012 (UTC)

Cool! You agree with me that the Admin page needs some better functionality, though? - Chris 01:42, September 11, 2012 (UTC)
I dunno, it seems to work fine for me. But anything to make the wiki better, I'm all for. --Cubs Fan2007 (Talk to me) 02:16, September 11, 2012 (UTC)
I thought about several improvements:
Admin page
  1. A textbox for admin comment/rejection reason
  2. Better sorting of nominations (prefdate by prefdate asc, pending by nomdate asc, other by nomdate asc)
  3. An option to instant-delete a nomination (for spam and bots)
  4. Pagination for the nominations
  5. Quick link to remove the prefdate
  6. Make it possible to mark an accepted song "pending" again, for when you accidentially accepted one too early, you can delete it from the queue then and reset the nomination status
  7. Apply the same status to multiple pages (by checkboxes)
  8. Accept multiple nominations (checkboxes), be referred to an interim page where you can put the numbers from 1 to X in an extra textbox to define an order before they are enqueued
  9. Make more buttons for quick-maintaining
  10. Dynamically settable character-limit
User page enhancements
  1. Add a text box to specify displayed username (only logged in users, tribute to you Wink)
  2. Propagate the help
  3. Change "I nominated this song because..." into a non-copyable explaination like "Tell us, what makes this song so special compared to all other nominated songs."
  4. Check for bad media ids and refuse nomination acception
  5. Warn user when a preferred date is already taken by others, so they can decide if they want to try nevertheless
  6. When reviewing your nominations as logged in user, show all nominations by that account
  7. Make a nomination in two steps: 1) artist + song 2) media ids (with search links) + other stuff
  8. Displaytext for artist and song
System changes
  1. An additional state to mark a nomination "needs improvement", so no long "pending", once reviewed they're either "n. i." or "suitable"
  2. Raise minimum character count
  3. Limit number of submitted nominations per day and user
  4. Limit number of nominations (count: pending, changed, rejected, needs improvement) in queue by user
  • prefdate-noms that passed their prefdate are shown "accepted" although they were not (only affects the Admin page)
  • Nominations containing a " are cropped behind that character in edit mode
Feel free to comment on any or add more. All are suggestions, imagine a "(?)" behind all issues except for the bugs, of course. - Chris 14:37, September 11, 2012 (UTC)
I need to get these done, reading them almost 3 months later, and they're all great ideas! - Chris 04:19, December 9, 2012 (UTC)

Cruel Summer (2012)

Hey Chris. While doing work for the red links on the iTunes top 100, I noticed this compilation Cruel Summer (2012). Now, many, many artists from the GOOD Music record label collaborate for some of these songs. So I'm not exactly sure if some of these should get collaboration artist pages made (like I did with John Legend & Teyana Taylor and Kanye West & Big Sean), or if they should just go to a single artist and credit the rest using the "fa" section of the Song template. I'm a bit confused since iTunes credits all the artists for some songs, while other sources cite several artists as the artist with several featuring artists. Could you somehow fix this up to avoid confusion? XxTimberlakexx (talk) 19:39, September 20, 2012 (UTC)

Hi Nic,
hm, from what I read about it @ Google I'd say none of these songs is by a main artist with features; in my opinion they are all co-productions, also because this album is meant to be a collaboration. In this case, the unsatisfactory answer would be: we need collaboration pages like the ones you created. However I feel that the problem is that this way we'd need tons of redirects, too. For example, what you created at Kanye West & Big Sean:The One should actually be Kanye West, Big Sean, 2 Chainz & Marsha Ambrosius:The One (according to Wikipedia). So we'd need the artist page Kanye West, Big Sean, 2 Chainz & Marsha Ambrosius, and redirects like Kanye West:The One for Big Sean:The One and so on.
I'm not very enthusiastic about such artist pages that A) likely nobody will ever search for B) almost nobody will find or use and C) that will never be populated by anything besides that one song. Nevertheless that is the only clean possibility to avoid a red artist links on the song page (dirty solution: we set the artist to one of them and use alias for the display text). I'm not so sure whether any of this possibilities is actually fully satisfactory - maybe 6, Senv, Trainman, Hard4me or Eeepy have different/further thoughts or more elaborate solutions on how to deal with this album. - Chris 21:43, September 20, 2012 (UTC)
Alright. Well, I fixed the first two songs from the compilation to meet these standards. I'll hopefully do the rest later (this is a popular album at the moment and has many songs on the top 100 currently, so I want to get this done soon). However, two songs on the album actually ARE credited as a main artist with features, so I'll leave those be. (Cold and Mercy) XxTimberlakexx (talk) 22:30, September 20, 2012 (UTC)
I'm not too keen on having to create artist pages for those either. I'd prefer an alternative Song template, called {{SongCollaboration}} or something, with artist1, artist2 etc. instead of one "main" artist. I'm too busy right now, but I could get working on it next week – if it's what we want. — 6×9 (Talk) 07:39, September 21, 2012 (UTC)
That was also my idea, a template which supports adding of multiple equivalent artists opposed to main artist. A quick approach is {{SongCollaboration}}, not tested though, I'm in a hurry. - Chris 14:20, September 21, 2012 (UTC)

Frozen namespaces 2&3

Hi, Chris

first of all - thanks for help with User:Mimbyus :). But haven't you noticed lately, that difficulties on my user or talk page loading (we've talked about them on various ocasions) now became typical for most other users also? Or that's only my exceptional impression? --Senvaikis (talk) 11:33, September 24, 2012 (UTC)
Hi Senv,
all active users accumulate more and more badges as time goes by.
Talk pages you visit are usually those of us admins (or users with many contributions), I guess? Well, these are the users who are affected by the problem when many badges slow down the page generation (PHP) and rendering (browser).
But there's an easy workaround: whenever I try to access any talk page, I copy the link target from the context menu, paste it into the addressbar and manually append ?useskin=monobook. This overrides the skin selection for that page (in case you didn't know). So I avoid loading all the badges and can access talk pages without having to switch my skin in the preferences all the time.
(To quote you:) HTH, Chris 20:52, September 24, 2012 (UTC) Smile
The trick really helps to overcome the freezing - thx :). But it didn't help to understand what may so impede the loading of user talkpages, taking now >1 min (or freezing at all) even for such users as Mimbyus, with all his 36 edits :) --Senvaikis (talk) 05:54, September 25, 2012 (UTC)
Ohhhh, now that I visited the page, I can see this is a bug!
For me, it says Mimbyus has 36 edits and 70 achievement points, #1000 (minimum); so far nothing special. But it also states he had 108 badges, the latest one for adding 11.750 pages to categories. At this point, I realized that those are actually my 108 badges. Every user has my 108 badges displayed for me, even you with your actual 3,500 ones. So what you experience at the moment is what I used to get when I visited your user- or talkpage and all your badges were appended. If you'd visit the same pages but logged in as Lwt, it should display no badges and loading is really fast.
Now it all makes sense, like that I didn't have problems with user pages lately, not even when trying to load your page. I will report this bug now. - Chris 13:53, September 25, 2012 (UTC)

Hey Chris,

I hate to bombard you with so many questions, but I checked out your SongCollaboration template and attempted to use it and, well, I guess I used it wrong. Have you tested it out yet? If so, you could show me the page you tested it out on, so my error could be fixed, and I could retry using it on some pages. The documentation on the template page is a bit confusing as well. Thanks! XxTimberlakexx (talk) 18:54, September 24, 2012 (UTC)

Kanye West, Big Sean, 2 Chainz & Marsha Ambrosius:The One
In case you were getting weird brackets on the pages you tried it on: my fault, I forgot two closing brackets. When you look at the code, you will know why I didn't see it Lol - Chris 22:46, September 24, 2012 (UTC)
Ah, alright. Well, the good news is, I got all the songs from Cruel Summer created, and created the singular artist redirects for each one as well Grin However, some problems/questions:
1. When some of the artist collaboration pages for songs from this album show up on the iTunes top 100, they will show up as red links. Should I redirect the "artist page" to the song itself?
2. On this song, this song is the only collab song on the album with 7 artists, which maximizes the total on the SongCollaboration template, which is six. Could you possibly extend it so it can include one more artist?
3. I only added the SongCollaboration template for songs on the album by more than 2 artists. Should I add it for the 2 artist songs as well, since they only collaborated for one song and don't really need their own page?

Thanks in advance, bro Tongue XxTimberlakexx (talk) 23:30, September 24, 2012 (UTC)

  1. In my opinion: yes.
  2. Done.

Night, Chris 23:38, September 24, 2012 (UTC)

Basically I could make {{SongCollaboration}} use loops to extend it to handle an infinite number of artists (theoretically, current loop iteration limit per page is 80 or something, and few iterations are "used" by {{Caps Check}}). Fun fact: although the number of artists increases, it would shorten the code. - Chris 23:38, September 24, 2012 (UTC)

Max. number is 100, actually. Should be enough for ridiculous numbers of artists and still leave some to spare. — 6×9 (Talk) 15:26, September 25, 2012 (UTC)
Switched to loops. (Might eventually do the same for fa#, also in {{Song}}.) — 6×9 (Talk) 15:48, September 25, 2012 (UTC)

I was about to ask whether this was a voting for loops and whether I should refactor the code. Thanks for doing this already whilst I wrote this.

Maybe a parser hook extension would be useful for something like this, maybe in other wikis, too. Syntax:

  • Loop over all parameters called a1, a2, ... until a(n+1) doesn't exist.
  • Prepend "b" to each a(i)
  • Append "c" to each a(i)
  • Use "d" as separator between the first n-1 items
  • Use "e" as separator in front of the last item
  • Prepend "f" to the whole list
  • Append "g" to the whole list
  • If n is 0, don't generate output at all (not even "f" or "g")

Example output with {{{a1}}} = 1, ..., {{{a5}}} = 5: "fb1cdb2cdb3cdb4ceb5cg".

Sensible example:

{{#list:a|(|)|, | and |Some numbers: |.}}

Output: Some numbers: (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5).

You can enable an additional hook #listv:, which uses variables instead of parameters (requires Variables extension). - Chris 16:20, September 25, 2012 (UTC)

One question to you, 6: why did you remove the hidden span? I'm pretty sure we inserted it so that the first links on the page are the artists. This was crucial for MediaWiki to generate good meta-tag keywords, wasn't it? - Chris 18:29, September 25, 2012 (UTC)

Can't find the discussion anymore, but a long time ago there was a weird bug when songs and albums started disappearing from their respective artist's WLH. We couldn't figure out the reason, so I tried whether invisible links at the top wouldn't fix this. ([1] & [2]) The disappearances stopped, but I've no idea whether the links actually had anything to do with it and if they're still necessary.
Anyway, for this template I didn't think the possible fixing of a minor bug was worth the huge amounts of extra code. I never even thought of meta tags though, guess we should check whether it makes a difference. — 6×9 (Talk) 19:11, September 25, 2012 (UTC)

Album of the Week

Now, I know I brought this up to you once before, but Hard4me is yet again being lazy with Album of the Week. I reminded him several times on Facebook, yet he ignored me and left it as it is. I am just curious; is there a way I can update it/manage it for some time since it doesn't seem like he is going to update it much anymore? I'm not talking about taking over the project, I'm talking about simply having the power to update it when he does not take care of it for an extended period of time after it should be changed, like now. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 21:34, October 10, 2012 (UTC)

Not sure if you read this message yet, or checked your talk page for that matter, since it's been a day since I posted it, and I saw you editing today. Just posting again so you get the New messages reminder. Tongue XxTimberlakexx (talk) 01:32, October 12, 2012 (UTC)

Oops, sorry, I thought I had answered about it yet. Well, I think you should be able to do all possible steps. Those pages are not restricted to any other user permissions than "Administrator", so it should be ok. And I think, there is no reason why you couldn't change it.
I also saw your nomination for AOTW. I think you should spice it up with wikilinks before it goes on the mainpage sooner or later. Maybe, we need to disable AOTW soon. It's fun if the main page changes its featured topic frequently, but I think it's very notable that you cannot come up with 52 superb nominations per year... I also wanted to redesign the help section. - Chris 17:45, October 12, 2012 (UTC)
Alright, great! I just updated it, I hope I did everything right. I updated the template, left a message on the nominators' talk page, and updated the list of past Albums of the Weeks. Speaking of which, could you archive that list for me? It hasn't been done for over 2 years, and I'm worried I'll mess something up if I try to do it.
And sure, I'll add some wiki links to my nom. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 16:28, October 13, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for archiving the AOTW stuff! Grin I'm going to take care of Album of the Week for a while, since Hard4me is probably not going to update it again. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 00:39, October 14, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Edit wars

Thank you for letting me know about this. I will try my best to cease starting/getting involved in edit wars and I understand. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 22:56, October 18, 2012 (UTC)

Okay, thank you for the quick response. But what about the non-lyrics now? Senv is apparently not having an opinion or is unwilling to share it. I guess he sees no point in writing it down if it's ignored. I think you understood by now that re-inserting that lines without further notice appears to be a bit "sneaky" from our point of view, and I'm confident you'll do better next time. And as always, I'm not keen on making a big thing out of this, so please re-join the conversation and let's try to find a uniform rule to handle this. I think we should keep the page as it is for the moment to avoid cluttering up the history even more. - Chris 23:05, October 18, 2012 (UTC)
Quote by LWChris: "Senv is apparently not having an opinion or is unwilling to share it"? Funny. I definitely have an opinion and have shared it but seems it should be repeated here: I'm with 6 (contra non-lyrics inclusion except for cases when that may have some common-sense) and Chris (pro inclusion unless it doesn't have any common-sense). Hope you see that logical meaning of both formulas are the same. In other words, - I'm definitely contra mandatory, blind all non-lyrics (Doo-wops, vocalises, vocaleses, scats, noises etc.) inclusion. So, next to Chris, I'd also left one line of the non-lyrics, followed by "...".
I suspect that again may be insufficient, so here's one more my opinion: page just can't be left as is after three other admins have pointed more or less expressed disagreement - not because that's very important for the page or these admins. That's more important as imperative, obligatory for any LW page editor, and young admin especially. --Senvaikis (talk) 08:11, October 19, 2012 (UTC)
Updated the page according to current consensus. Let's hope it stays that way... Anyone volunteering to update the help page? — 6×9 (Talk) 10:54, October 19, 2012 (UTC)
Also, thank you for letting me know about this subject matter. I could still update the AOTW but I've just been so busy with school and all lately. Thankfully, Nick has helped me with it lately. But not that many people are nominating as much as they used to. Right now, I need to get back on my project so just leave a message on my talk page if you need anything else. hard4me (talk) 15:11, October 19, 2012 (UTC)
@Senv: Thank you for pointing it out again, I've been reading the post again and still couldn't find it as clear as you wrote it here (just something like "your opinions are the same, and it's the only possible way"). But I was also tired yesterday evening.
@Hard4me (I think I knew your name once, but I can't remember atm >.<; was it something with D?): It's okay if you don't have time to update things, but next time we'd appreciate a really short notice that someone else should take it over. This helps a lot. Smile
@6: I'd be glad if somebody else could take the update, I'm bad at writing common rules. Blush - Chris 18:50, October 19, 2012 (UTC)
@Chris: Hard4me's name is Dylan. :P Also, if Hard4me doesn't want to update AOTW anymore, can I remove his name from the template and everything and replace it with mine? I'd be glad to update it regularly.
Also, quick question: I updated AOTW today, since it's been a week since I put White Blood Cells up, but I think I did it a day early. Is that okay? Like, I put White Blood Cells up from Oct. 13-20, but then when I was putting up Tuff Enuff, I realized all the requests from before wait an extra day before putting up the next one, so I put the date for Tuff Enuff as October 21-28. I'm sure it's not a big deal, is it?
@6: Can we remove the parentheses from the ellipsis that follows the "Da da da" on Roundabout? It looks better without the parentheses, and I've seen other lyrics sites do it that way. Also, can we add the (doo doo doo) next to it since that's repeated as well? So in result, it would look like this: Da da da da da da da (doo doo doo)... XxTimberlakexx (talk) 12:45, October 20, 2012 (UTC)
^ I posted this over 2 days ago, reminding you just in case you didn't see it. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 01:32, October 23, 2012 (UTC)
I've no real preference for "..." or "(...)", so you can remove the parentheses if you want.
The "doo"s only come in after the third round of "da"s, so putting them in like you suggested above would actually be "wrong". Therefore I'd prefer to leave them out. — 6×9 (Talk) 17:33, October 23, 2012 (UTC)
Alright, got that fixed. Now we just have to wait for Chris to respond to his portion. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 01:28, October 24, 2012 (UTC)
AOTW thing is okay, I think we can forget the "of the week" anyways if you look at the durations the albums were. One day more or less is not that bad, I guess. A general rule such as "every Monday" would be desirable, though. - Chris 14:12, October 24, 2012 (UTC)
Alright, great. I'll remove Hard4me's name from the template and the nomination page and replace it with mine. But that sounds good, I'll update it every Monday then. I'm a bit confused though; if we are going to update it every Monday, then will the next AOTW be from the 29th (October) to the 5th (November)? Because from what I've seen, the albums don't change until a day after the week is up, so if we were to update it every Monday, the next one would be from Nov. 5th to Nov. 12, and obviously the 5th is the final day of the one after Tuff Enuff. What should we do about this? Should we let the albums stay as AOTW for a full week and update it the day after the week has passed, or update it on the exact day a week has passed? About the name: yes, I think it's not a problem if you change the name until Dylan says he's not so busy anymore and wants to take the project again. We can change it back easily then. I think it's okay if you update the AOTW any time on Mondays (the 29th for example) and the AOTW date is meant to be inclusive, i. e. from Monday to Sunday. So current one would actually be 22nd to 28th, and the next one would be 29th to 4th, and so on. It currently says "to 28th" but the change happens on the 29th, because it's meant like "to the end of the 28th". So actually the change would ideally happen at 0:00:01 a.m. at Oct., 29th, but that's not possible, so you change it on Monday, and the timespan is Monday to Sunday. Like with SOTD that is daily updated at 9 a.m. Okay? Smile - Chris 22:09, October 24, 2012 (UTC)
Alright, great! I just fixed Tuff Enuff, as well as the one before it (White Blood Cells) using that information. I'll start updating it on Mondays. Thanks for informing me! XxTimberlakexx (talk) 23:47, October 24, 2012 (UTC)

Got some bad news

Welp, after updating AOTW today, I realized there is only one nomination left, which is my nomination of Tears for Fears's Songs from the Big Chair. After that gets put up next week, then what should we do? XxTimberlakexx (talk) 20:09, November 5, 2012 (UTC)

Either you make some nominations up, or maybe ask CubsFan, or we simply hide the section. As I said, I feel it's a dying section. We couldn't even keep up with "Free Music of the Month", so how are we supposed to do it weekly? - Chris 21:00, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
Well, I can't be the one to nominate everything. Other users should participate too. Do you think we should advertise it more? Like, maybe put something on the main page that encourages users to nominate an Album of the Week? I know there's tons of editors here and I'm sure they'd want to help.
Also, I feel that Free Music of the Month was a worse section than Album of the Week. After all, you can't find that much free music anymore. Album of the Week, however, has more potential, and I feel that we should keep it because if we just have Song of the Day, it'll feel a bit plain. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 21:11, November 7, 2012 (UTC)
Well, then go ahead and advertise. I can't make up album recommendations, there's barely an album I entirely like. I will soon come up with two though, but not now. - Chris 21:06, November 8, 2012 (UTC)
You want me to advertise it? I'm very bad with wiki coding. I was thinking of putting some fancy template thing on the main page that encourages users to nominate an album of the week. Maybe a yellow template, similar to the one we had when we changed our nomination form for Song of the Day, and it could say something like "LyricWiki needs your help! Nominate an album of the week!" (the second sentence would link to the nomination page) or something like that. I know Senv and 6 times 9 are probably pretty experienced with coding and stuff and they could do something similar to the box we had that encouraged users to nominate SOTDs. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 22:49, November 9, 2012 (UTC)
I once set up a global and a localized main page announcement system. Not sure it's still working, probably not, since the change to the new main page basically removed all functionalities... I'll re-add that box for you. Some first editing was done here. - Chris 23:20, November 9, 2012 (UTC)
That's perfect! The part I don't understand though is the first portion that reads "Your name on our main pages...". What did you mean by that? Anyways, hopefully you can put it up soon, I might nominate another album after Songs from the Big Chair to give it more than a week to be set up and seen by users, and hopefully we'll be racking in the noms soon. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 00:07, November 10, 2012 (UTC)
Well, if you nominate an album, your name will appear one week long on our mainpage, won't it? I was referring to that. You may edit the note to "Your favourite album on ..." though, if you think that's better. Smile - Chris 00:26, November 10, 2012 (UTC)
Alright, I did that. Now, when will you put it up on the main page? XxTimberlakexx (talk) 14:10, November 12, 2012 (UTC)
Might take a little while, I'm so busy and working on the main page template is so time consuming. Maybe on Saturday. - Chris 23:35, November 13, 2012 (UTC)
Alright. I'll remind you on Saturday then. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 02:21, November 14, 2012 (UTC)
Well, it's Saturday! When will you put it up today? XxTimberlakexx (talk) 15:36, November 17, 2012 (UTC)
Looks good! I just wish you added the page to nominate songs somewhere in the template as well, or else inexperienced users to the wiki won't know where to nominate their album. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 21:32, November 17, 2012 (UTC)
Go for it Wink - Chris 23:47, November 17, 2012 (UTC)

Missing </lyrics> in song pages

Hi, I came across the song Breakdown Of Sanity:One Bullet Left with a missing </lyrics> at the end of the lyrics. The song footer was (validly) present as well but obviously interpreted as part of the lyrics. The thing is, the missing part apparently leads to the assumption by LW that the page itself is valid as it was only added to the category "Green Songs" but not missing song footer what'd seem legit in this case or another likely category implying an error on the page. I am sure I came across several pages before with a missing lyrics at the end but never recognized that the page wasn't added to any categories that'd help to find these faulty pages. But in this particular case it's rather ugly to see the song footer in the lyrics (or any other information that's added at the end by users in general). However, maybe there is a (hidden) category for this already and I didn't find that one? If so how is it called? If not, any thoughts about this making things easier to find those pages? - MusicAddict (talk) 19:24, November 13, 2012 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for letting me know! As far as I know there is no such category, and I'm also pretty sure that it's technically not even possible to have such a category:
Pages are put into categories by writing [[Category:Category Name]] on the page. That can be done manually in the edit window or in the right-hand sidebar when in edit mode. Alternatively that text might be "hiddenly*" put there by what is parsed from our templates. Within LyricWiki, 99% of all [[Category:...]] texts are added by the templates on the page. Here comes why a category for the missing end tag issue is impossible:
  • Pages are rendered "one way", from top to bottom. That is: the {{Song}} template can't find out which other templates are there below. Only a template after the {{SongFooter}} would be able to notice that it's missing. As that template wouln't be rendered as well, this is impossible.
  • The other option is that someone put the category manually on the page. Does anybody do that, does it make sense to do that? I think not. Hihi
There is a way to find such pages though, although it might be something only a genius with great software could possibly do: {{SongFooter}} puts all page into the hidden category Song. If we compare all pages in Green to Gold Songs to all pages in Category:Song, the ones missing in Song should be the ones without a {{SongFooter}}.
There could still be pages missing both, but those are simply not findable by categories or anything else than explicitly checking all existing pages.

* ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) English! Y U NO have adverb for hidden? Wink

Yes, such check is possible. Was lazy to search for some other song with the same defect, so temporary undid correction of Breakdown Of Sanity:One Bullet Left to make sure that Chris' algrithm works as supposed.
Hope to include it into Lwt equipment, thanks for nice idea ---Senvaikis (talk) 13:12, November 14, 2012 (UTC)
done Done. Never thought that number of such Footerless Songs* may be over 500! Here are also results for footerless Artists* and Albums*. --Senvaikis (talk) 17:36, November 14, 2012 (UTC)
P.S. * - fixed already.
P.P.S. Fixed completely - now only one "artist" remains footerless :). --Senvaikis (talk) 21:48, November 15, 2012 (UTC)
Senv, you're awesome! - Chris 22:28, November 15, 2012 (UTC) P.S.: My awesome stats table tells me we have violet pages, what about those?
Yes, your stats table is really awesome, but take a look at very similar table - it's not so pretty as yours (being a half-year older), but oriented on slightly different stats (counting by pagetype, not by color). Now, after forgotten Violet categories (Singles too, btw) were rechecked and fixed, and looking at this old table, I have a question: why is the sum of all-colors Artists is still greater than Category:Artist.count, even without footeless Wizard? The same may be said about Songs (with 3 T-Lines) and Albums (5). What I'm still missing here? Or just all these pages should be simply touched, forcing such way refresh of the categories? --Senvaikis (talk) 19:28, November 17, 2012 (UTC)
Most likely there are pages in multiple color-categories. I used Special:CategoryIntersection to find out that
are in Category:Green Artists and Category:Bronze Artists. Don't want to manually check all other combinations right now, I'm working on including the announcements atm. - Chris 19:48, November 17, 2012 (UTC)
Well Done! Well, - seems this initialy negligible issue led us (me at least) to some remarkable discoveries. If you are working on announcements, I think it's time to make some barriers for:
  • {{Star}} using on page,
  • multiple {{Song}}s
  • most manual categories (I'd even think about strictly templates-driven categorizing)
--Senvaikis (talk) 22:16, November 17, 2012 (UTC)
You mean we should introduce include guards for single-use templates? This was not so difficult to achieve and could solve 1 and 2.
The problem is your number 3: although I also wish for "strictly templates-driven categorizing", we might need a lot of additional templates, depending on how many categories we introduced (such as Category:Christmas Songs). Furthermore removing the "Categories" section of the editor is possible, but it can't prohibit of category-links in the editor textfield. - Chris 00:16, November 18, 2012 (UTC)
So, what do you think, should we add an include guard? And Senv: I enhanced my stats table based on yours... - Chris 05:21, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
One of the first things I did when we got variables was to include a check for multiple song templates. It massively backfired -- apparently every single song page ended up in there once it got through the job queue. Maybe a counter variable would work, checking if value > 1 in SF.
As for finding footerless pages: How about using Category:Song? Add it both to tl:S and tl:SF, but with space (0x20) as sortname in the former and pagename (>= 0x21) in the latter -- last sortname overrides previous ones. Same obviously for other pagetypes. — 6×9 (Talk) 08:17, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
@guards:I'm not so good in templating as 6, thus can't judge if preventing of multiple pagetype redefining is really impossible.
@footerless pages detecting: 6' approach should work, I suppose. But agree - from methodical point of view it isn't very perfect. Let me stay a dreamer and ask you: why can't MWApi alongside with CategoryIntersection have also a "CategoryExclusion" function, returning something like "select page from allpages where page in catA and not(page in catB)"? That would make such detection as easy as pie :)
--Senvaikis (talk) 12:01, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
…A maxdepth parameter for intersection would also be useful to include subcategories, though potentially too expensive… — 6×9 (Talk) 12:37, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
@guards: I thought about we could do it the way C programmers prevent duplicate inclusion of their header files:
|{{#vardefine:templatename_included|1}}ALL THE CONTENT
@footerless: great idea with the overridden defaultsort in a maintenance (spell checking that word every time, although I always spelt it correctly so far) category! Haven't though of that, yet. - Chris 19:36, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
@C-type guard: Problem with that is that the job queue will probably throw lots of pages in C:Error, but when you open them they'll have only one instance of the template, and on touching they disappear from C:E. Like it happened in the past with lots of other debug categories. It should work with #ifeq instead of #if though. — 6×9 (Talk) 20:37, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
No idea why the page render engine does that, because undefined variables are expanded to empty string by default, but maybe the #var: hook is not written properly, like the keyword has to be "activated" for the hook which is not done on server purge, thus instead of {{#if:||}} it parses {{#if:{{#var:x}}||}}...
Anyway you're right,
|{{#vardefine:templatename_included|1}}ALL THE CONTENT
is safer, and it allows us to "unset" it from other templates by redefining it to 0 (if that should be needed anywhere). - Chris 05:11, December 10, 2012 (UTC)
I've made {{IncludeGuard}} and, for a test run, included it in Album and -Footer. No false positives so far, and one page actually turned up in Category:Page with multiple AlbumFooter templates. I suspect we can expect a couple more with {{Song}}...
...Damn, should have included the defaultsort check while I was at it... Oh well. — 6×9 (Talk) 09:53, December 22, 2012 (UTC)

It's working!

Hey bro, Nicolas here. So, I noticed the AOTW ad you and I worked on and placed on the main page is somewhat working! I've seen 5 new nominations as of recent, but two are very short and need to be edited. I figured we'd see some short nominations since that ad will attract newer users and even IPs to make nominations, so y'know. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know the ad is working, and hopefully AOTW will be back in the groove soon! :D XxTimberlakexx (talk) 22:10, November 28, 2012 (UTC)

Great! Soon I'll add my nomination, too. Just thinking of the text to write. By the way: I think it's legitimate if you "enrich" the super short nomination with facts around the album, like adding the genre or release date (for example changing "This album" to "This 1995 Rock album"), or some other interesting facts such as re-releases or awards, if there are any to write about. - Chris 19:31, November 29, 2012 (UTC)
Alright, great. Anyways, I'd rather not "enrich" other users' nominations, because some of the nominations are only one or two sentences, so enriching it in your standards wouldn't really do it any good. And in the Album of the Week criteria, it says to nominate an album for why you like it, and not just base it on releases and awards and all that jazz. So I can't really enrich other users' nominations because I don't know their detailed thoughts on the album they're nominating.
Anyways, quick question: Are EPs eligible to be Album of the Week? Nothing under the criteria really says whether the nomination has to be an album or if EPs are included as well. I know for a fact studio, live, and compilation albums are acceptable, and singles are definitely not, but what about EPs? I know it's not called EP of the Week, but I was just curious if they were acceptable or not.
Also, very sorry for the late response, been dealing with real-life stuff lately. XxTimberlakexx (talk) 21:40, December 5, 2012 (UTC)
About enriching: IMO facts belong in there in any case, but okay.
About EP: I think, as long as there's enough variety, it's okay. I'd rather not accept an EP that has the same song in 4 different versions, but else I see no reason for declining it. - Chris 23:27, December 5, 2012 (UTC)
I know facts should definitely be there, but the nom shouldn't be strictly facts. It should include why the nominator likes the album as well.
Alright, great. I'll add something to the criteria on the nomination page that only studio albums, live albums, compilation albums, and EPs can be nominated if they have variety. Thanks! XxTimberlakexx (talk) 02:18, December 6, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Accepting nominations

Yeah, I usually do read the reasons, but that I think that Glee cast song had a preferred date that, relative to when I accepted it, was just a couple days away. Cubs Fan2007 (Talk to me) 01:43, December 6, 2012 (UTC)

Okay, just make sure they don't jump the queue with a nearby date, and we needn't accept any nomination, especially not if the nomination states that the lyrics are wrong. Ideally, we'd only have gold songs of course, so the better the page, the better for us Smile - Chris 18:22, December 6, 2012 (UTC)

Help with lyrics

If I help with Krematoriy discography, can someone help me with p-funk lyrics?

I need lyrics for two Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns albums (mostly instrumental, so I think you don't have to do much) and So Goes The Story of Eddie Hazzel. I am from Brazil, so I have difficulties to understand those lyrics. Anyway, if you can help me, I'll be grateful. Lucswalker (talk) 22:29, December 16, 2012 (UTC)

Hi again, I corrected your post and formatted it, so others can read it, too. You needn't "trade" with help, though. I will look into it. - Chris 22:03, December 20, 2012 (UTC)

SOTD December 26, 2012

Hi LWChris! I'm just here to tell you that your nomination of Eminem:Stan has won Song of the Day for December 26, 2012!
Thanks for nominating a song and for contributing to LyricWiki!
