Eurovision Song Contest

Hi Kopf;

First, thank you for your contributions @ ESC. Trying to identify the artists associated with the contest can be a bit difficult as most of them no longer exist and the bands tend to disaapear after the contest. Right now in particular I need to find out what country Rock Bottom was from, Nowhere on the net can I find that band name associated with ESC 1958, (though a song by that name was a UK entry in '77)

In fact every other ESC artist for which you created a song page (and now we have an artist page for) needs to be identified. So at minimum please insert the source information for the ESC lists you created on top of each page, and beside each list entry (or on the artist page linked from the list) identify the country/hometown etc.

Logically a multinational contest whose entrants are left ambiguious doesn't fit a multinational site like lw ;) tia. --ES (talk) 07:01, April 5, 2013 (UTC) and please let me know if you have any questions.

Please see Rock Bottom (Lynsey de Paul and Mike Moran song) Wikipedia16. What I really need to know is the source information that you are using to create the ESC lists. The song Volare as a ESC'58 entry can only be found right here and nowhere else! also see Volare (song) Wikipedia16 and Eurovision Song Contest 1958 Wikipedia16. No mention of a Rock Bottom. tia --ES (talk) 11:32, April 5, 2013 (UTC)
It wasn't the 1958 entry, I never wrote so. It's simply a cover version of that song from the 1970s (it was releaed as a single - I own a copy). I have added cover versions to the lists because I thought it would be nice extra information. You can also delete them form those lists as cover versions are also referred to on the lyrics page anyway. Kopf101 (talk) 20:30, April 12, 2013 (UTC)
  1. the song contest list pages are for the songs that were entries in the contest by the contest artists, not covers by other artists, or other songs by contest artists that were not songs entered in the contest. This is obvious from the page title, and also from a quick look at contest pages created earlier by other editors.
  2. lw doesn't expect editors to own the recordings, what is expected is web refernces that verify the authenticity of the works so we know that pages do not contain bogus/spoof/spam/illegal content.
  3. Covered songs are listed on the original song page (the first recorded instance) not on the original artist's page, contest page, tv show album page etc.
You can fetch the cover lists (via the page history diffs) and put them in your private space if you wish.
If you make song pages, you can help us by identifying the artist on their page.

Hi Kopf,

I was wondering if Riguelle is the same person as Kingnee - Musicbrainz Patrick Riguelle. Please let me know.  · Lichtweber talk service  19:13, February 8, 2016 (UTC)

OK, the thing is that all our ext refs list him with full name. How about we rename the artist page to "Patrick Riguelle" and make "Riguelle" the alias? Would that be something you could agree to?  · Lichtweber talk service  21:35, February 8, 2016 (UTC)
Of course! :) Kopf101 (talk) 16:22, February 9, 2016 (UTC)
done Thanks!  · Lichtweber talk service  17:11, February 9, 2016 (UTC)

Tracklist format

Please see any artist/album page (that was not your own edition) for an example of track list format. tia --ES (talk) 19:55, January 7, 2017 (UTC)

What exactly is the problem?? ----Kopf101 (talk) 19:57, January 7, 2017 (UTC)
Pleas see above^ --ES (talk) 20:02, January 7, 2017 (UTC)
That's not helpful!! Just tell me what exactly is the problem!! Even if I looked at another page I couldn't compare with mine because you've deleted it!!! --Kopf101 (talk) 20:05, January 7, 2017 (UTC)
@ES: a simple search & replace would have taken only marginally longer than deletion.
@Kopf: I suggest using preview instead of multiple edits if something (homepage) doesn't work on first try. — 6×9 (Talk) 20:14, January 7, 2017 (UTC)
@Kopf: Please at least try Special:Wikify old tool, hand crafting track lists has many problems, like proper capitalization. If you wish to venture further, please see Custom Scripts, which leads to Wikifyers for various sites for making track lists. --ES (talk) 02:33, January 8, 2017 (UTC)
I've added so many pages over the last six years and yesterday I just accidentally overwrote and then copied part of the given template (when adding a preformatted page). SORRY, everybody makes a mistake once in a while... --Kopf101 (talk) 06:37, January 8, 2017 (UTC)
No worries, we are still dealing with "Volarrrre" from 6 years ago ;-) --ES (talk) 11:27, March 9, 2017 (UTC)

Artist page creation

Please see [1] --ES (talk) 18:21, March 24, 2017 (UTC)

Page names, refs

Please refrain from creating song pages without a reference. Every song page needs a link to an external site (see song page footer) that verifies the artist name from a release (album, single etc.)
Picking your preference as to whether the artist name is in native script or english is not acceptable.
Also please see the example given above as to how to create a stub artist pages according to site policy, or if that is too cumbersome, avoid artist page creation until you are familiar with the procedure.

  • Sad to say after so many edits, your editions are as <......> as they were years ago. A trip to the docs is highly recommended. tia --ES (talk) 08:01, March 25, 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Kopf,

as I've said already in my talk page, I'm sad about your decision and really want to change it, - we really appreciate your (as any other our user) contribution to LW. Everybody (me including) makes a mistakes, and pointing to them shouldn't be considered as mistreatment. Let's take my decision to change Lucie Jones EP into the single as an example: yes, it doesn't contain any other lyrics, but I should have noticed an instrumental song version... In other words, that may be considered as a mistake, 'cause instrumental song is an LW object too. So, I'm going to restore your initial page for this digital EP, as an expression of readiness to admit my own mistakes, in hope to change your decision :)
regards, --Senvaikis (talk) 10:06, April 6, 2017 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. :) I apologise for overreacting. I understand the need of guidelines etc. but I was still a little pi**ed at a certain person (not you) who treats voluntary (!) contributors like idiots if they make minor mistakes. --Kopf101 (talk) 11:35, April 6, 2017 (UTC)
Hi again, - I'm really glad that you made the right decision, but looking at your recent contribs (especially corrected/deleted), I see that you was right, speaking about the need of guidelines - it still remains actual indeed :). Let me know if you'd like me to clarify in more detail what I'm speaking about :)
cheers, --Senvaikis (talk) 17:14, April 12, 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I have noticed myself that I used wrong capitalization on file names for pictures, but I think I've done it correctly for the last couple of uploads. What else should I do differently? --Kopf101 (talk) 17:23, April 12, 2017 (UTC)

Truth to tell, image file name capitalization isn't determined by LW policy, so actually it may differ from the display part of the album title, - just making them identical slightly simplifies the format of {{Album Art}} on artist page, and thus is desirable/recommended. In other words, that's not a violation of LW policy, and usually should not be considered as the reason for file deletion/reupload.
Quite another thing - file size and dimensions. Don't know if you have ever studied your contribs history (quite usefull thing, should note), but it'd show you, that considerable part of your images have been deleted/reuploaded (with their size as the reason in most cases).
So, the short answer to the question "what's wrong with your images?" is simple: "their size". File may be:
  • oversized: that's one of most common (and serious) violations of LW policy and leads to inevitable file deletion - knowingly it is written in bold red on Upload form page: "...not exceed a measurement of 500×500 pixels or a file size of 150 KB.. That's why your DeletedContributions list is such long - it contains a lot of images, deleted for the standard reason: "Too big for fairuse (max. is 500×500px/150 KB)".
  • thumbnailed": though low resolution images aren't desirable, actually that's not a violation of LW policy; but if image with a better allowable resolution is available, result will be the same - sooner or later your image will be reuploaded with a better one. The most funny thing is that quite often the source of your lo-res images actually contained much better quality image, just you've used image thumbnail instead of original.
Resume: we should strive to upload the best available image, but not exceeding allowable size. And if you find such image at some source, don't forget to use the original image, not its thumbnail (Use your browser context menu "View Image" for this task). If this (original) image size exceeds allowable limits, it should be resized/reduced to 500x500 px/150 KB before uploading.
Sounds quite complicated, and truth to tell, sometimes it may be really complicated (context menu may be disabled on some sites etc). But all this complicated job (image searching, resizing, adding mandatory description template with all required info, image uploading and even more) may be simplified up to a childish game and done in a few seconds with two our js-driven tools: iTune-Wikifyer and Spotify-Wikifyer. Sorry, I should leave now, thus here's just a short demo, showing how this job may look like (maybe I'll update/comment it tomorrow) - let me know if you have some questions.
nite, --Senvaikis (talk) 20:38, April 12, 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, that's very helpful! I have to admit that uploading the oversized image was stupid (I simply forgot to resize it). Once I noticed, I made the following pictures especially small (since it's not in the docs that the highest quality possible up to 500x500 shall be uploaded - it only says "not higher than 500x500, so I thought "the smaller, the better"). I'll stick to 500x500 from now on. --Kopf101 (talk) 05:45, April 13, 2017 (UTC)
The iTunes wikifyer works perfectly fine for me, but the spotify wikifier doesn't. No matter which artist I search for, I'm always told "bad request". Am I doing it wrong? --Kopf101 (talk) 06:17, April 13, 2017 (UTC)
That's strange... What's your default browser? I suspect - IE (some changes are happening right now on SP site...). Unfortunately, I can't test it right now. Haven't you tried testing the same page on another browser (FF, CR)? Let me know, - tia, --Senvaikis (talk) 09:10, April 13, 2017 (UTC)
Yay, it works in Google Chrome. Thank you! :) --Kopf101 (talk) 09:13, April 13, 2017 (UTC)

Hi, just wanted to let you know that I was reading about your struggle with singles and that I empathize with where you are at. I have seen from the activity log that you are one of the main contributors to the site of late and I hope that this whole experience has not been too disheartening for you. If it helps I just posted a blog User blog:DesPhagues/Enhancements containing some of the same things that I have seen you struggle with. Hopefully engaging the wider wikia community will bring some resolution to some of the issues that we have both been struggling with. DesPhagues (talk) 12:30, April 14, 2017 (UTC)

Hi, thank you for your kind comment. It's indeed frustrating. I don't insist on singles, but I think it's unfair to not be given correct information and then be treated like yo were the one who did something wrong. I know I was very harsh towards that certain person, but I think he has to be shown that he is not our boss and that we are not his employees. Mais je crains que nous nous battions contre des moulins à vent... --Kopf101 (talk) 12:45, April 14, 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed that you were editing quite a few Dutch artists and and I wanted to let you know that I have created a {{Userboxes/Dutch}} template for understanding Dutch if you wanted to add it to your about section... DesPhagues (talk) 13:10, May 25, 2017 (UTC)

Dank je wel! :) I am gonna add it to my about section! --Kopf101 (talk) 15:17, May 25, 2017 (UTC)

Trusted User status etc

Hi, Kopf

First of all - thanks for your diligent and solid contribution to our ESC department - nice job! Well Done!.
I'm impressed by consistency and reliability of your contribs - most of them remain on the top of edit history - that's is a sure sign of your editions reliability, letting me to include you into "trusted" users group. That doesn't bring you any evident privileges, but essentially changes your status @LW and makes a life of admins lil'bit easier ;). Anyways - congrats!
But, as you know, perfection has no limits, thus you still can reduce the count of your editions, requiring some further revisions. Here are some of samples for possible recheck, taken from your edit history:
Let me know, if you'll have any questions regarding these notes -
regards, --Senvaikis (talk) 17:50, July 16, 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much, that's very nice of you!
I'll pay more attention on the three things you mentioned in the future. --Kopf101 (talk) 18:00, July 16, 2017 (UTC)

ESC related list

In case you haven't seen them... Bobogoobo's ESC lists that you may find useful: User:Bobogoobo/DPL -ES (talk) 07:34, July 17, 2017 (UTC)

Thanks! The list will be helpful to double check. Currently I'm doing years and countries by turns, so I will reach each song that appears on the lists at some point. --Kopf101 (talk) 07:41, July 17, 2017 (UTC)

Hi Kopf, great job on Katja's page. Specially with the japanese version of "Wunder ...". I always wanted to do fix it but, you know: The road to hell ... . I think, as I've added also the italian one, now there are all versions of this song. Senv added some albums and now someone (me? Oh no, please!) just has to add a lot of lyrics. --Ignor-the-ant (talk) 17:30, July 30, 2017 (UTC)

P.S.: I'm still looking for someone who speaks good Dutch and is able to crate the missing lyricpages for this album: Reinhard Mey:Er Zijn Dagen (1976).
Hi, I'm currently focusing on Eurovision entries and since Katja took part three times I focused on these three entries. Once I've added and checked all Eurovision entries (I've done 1100/1479 entries so far) I am going to return to some of the artists to add more lyrics. Katja is definitely one of them, I've already planned to transcribe many of her German and French lyrics. I also have some of her more obscure records that can't be found on spotify. I'm also going to take a look at Reinhard Mey's album, maybe I can be of help. --Kopf101 (talk) 10:22, July 31, 2017 (UTC)
O.K., fine. Thank you! :-) --Ignor-the-ant (talk) 23:00, July 31, 2017 (UTC)

Album List

Quote from Help:Contents/Editing/Formatting/Artists#Album_List:

Do not create pages for the following:
... Singles, EPs, live albums or single-artist compilations only containing songs already listed elsewhere, or only containing a single song not listed elsewhere, unless they are highly noteworthy (e.g. platinum-selling)

  • Considering the above; Anjeza:The Image Of You (2004) is a redundant release, as well as possibly most of the singles (associated with ESC) that you have created in the past couple of months. hth. --ES (talk) 05:59, August 11, 2017 (UTC)
So various artists compilations qualify as "elsewhere"? Is this common policy? The rest of the text clearly gives the impression that "album", "release" etc. always refers to releases by the artist himself/herself. --Kopf101 (talk) 06:24, August 11, 2017 (UTC)
