WP-Song

Ah, thanks. I misread the WPSong documentation (it says place above the lyrics tag, I misread that as saying place above, well, everything...) Eschiss1 (talk) 00:14, January 10, 2014 (UTC)

No problem, I just spotted it. If you're not sure just click preview before making your change, when it doesn't look good something is wrong :) And thank you for spotting & correcting the error! Happy editing, --Fassbrause (talk) 00:18, January 10, 2014 (UTC)

The Mamas & The Papas:Monday, Monday

Pixies Bagboy: EP/single version vs. album version

Hi,

Recently you linked Pixies Bagboy lyrics from EP3 to the same title on their new Indie Cindy album.

The lyrics of that song on the Indie Cindy album are somewhat different (making the version on EP3 essentially the "single version" and the Indie Cindy version the "album version")

The differences are with the cover/polish your breath/speech/teeth parts: the album version drastically simplifies these.

The reason I'm telling you this is that I haven't quite figured out how to reflect these differences in the versions yet reflect their connections without potentially causing havoc on the pages for the songs/albums. (I'm still learning bit by bit)

I am hoping you have more experience with LyricWikia and might be able to change right notations to reflect the differences between the 2 versions.

Thanks

Prkcz (talk) 01:52, May 1, 2014 (UTC)

Hi Prkcz, thanks for pointing that out :) I had no chance yet to hear the single/EP nor the album version of the song, but what I would suggest is: Either mark the differences on the same song page, when the lyrics differ only slightly. Or you can of course create a new page Pixies:Bagboy (Single Version) and link the new page to the Single/EP pages. See also LyricWiki:Help_Desk/Archive/2011#Same_song_with_lyric_differences. I hope that helps. --Fassbrause (talk) 09:22, May 1, 2014 (UTC)

OMG WTF!

I am sure there is a perfectly good explanation why that page must be capitalized like that...It's an acronym like ABBA?! Wink ES (talk) 05:38, November 18, 2014 (UTC)

Well, the name of the band itself is according to their Facebook page a "chimera" of them, so it isn't an acronym Smile The name is uppercased on their CD covers etc. I thought I followed LyricWiki:Page_Names#Example_Titles correctly when I kept the artist name uppercased just like ABBA instead of Abba: "The artist's name in this example is kept all in capitals, because that is the closest to the original's format as per the Swedish and English Wikipedias". I learned later that it isn't always the case. Can we maybe make the help page more specific about that?
Greetings, --Fassbrause (talk) 10:54, November 18, 2014 (UTC)
Well I could be nuts, but I am not crazy enough to attempt updating documentation, that is Lichtweber's department, (hoping he chimes in here). I will uncap that page in due course. Take a look at the history of ALL CAPS Artists. I think this particular German band single handedly put the entire Japanese Cap Loving crowd to shame Wink Honestly, if we allow Kukubatschumunuluku to stay as is, then every other all caps page should stay also! hth and happy editing! ES (talk) 11:48, November 18, 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I totally agree with you, uncapping makes more sense in regards to consistency. I made an error by keeping it uppercased. I created a Job Exchange, as I don't know if you still have your bot. I don't want you to do it manually Wink.
Greetings, --Fassbrause (talk) 12:45, November 18, 2014 (UTC)

Whut? Heard someone calling my name. Came asap...  · Lichtweber talk service  19:24, December 10, 2014 (UTC)

Well it wasn't clear to me what to do with uppercased artist names after reading the documentation. Can you help me? According to it, I should name artist pages the following:
  • abcd -> Abcd
  • ABCD -> Abcd (except for popular bands like ABBA, where is the line?)
  • abCD -> AbCD or Abcd? (the T.A.T.u. example makes me think the former)
  • aBcD -> ABcD
Greetings, --Fassbrause (talk) 19:42, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
All correct – except that ABBA has nothing to do with popularity and everything to do with it being the members' initials, so they have a good reason. Most of the time, though, UPPERCASE is more a formatting choice, like bold or coloured text. Many albums have tracklists on the back cover in uppercase, but I doubt you'd want to rename the Stones song (to pick just one example) to BROWN SUGAR… — 6×9 (Talk) 20:45, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
It's clear for me to about song pages, yet I can't say I'm sold on the reasons to keep artists sometimes uppercased. When it contains the initials, okay. Maybe when even Wikipedia uppercases the artist? I guess when I'm in doubt I will keep it lowercased for now Smile
Btw: What's up with 6 Times 9?, I just found it in Category:Artist Grin
Greetings, --Fassbrause (talk) 21:11, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
Started as a joke(not that it ever stopped being one), was used as test page for a while, kinda grew and grew, and now we're all a little bit scared of it :-) And no, I don't look like that at all…
Using normalised case for new artists unless there's a very good reason to keep them uppercased is an excellent strategy; you'll hardly ever go wrong with it. — 6×9 (Talk) 21:31, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
I like how even the bots care about the artist :) I just saw that one user mistook its talk page for yours apparently (a year ago). - --Fassbrause (talk) 21:41, December 10, 2014 (UTC)

Related Artist, däs göry detäils

Fass, I saw ur edit and and edit commentary in the summary of Jacques Lu Cont. Brace urself! LOL

  • The artistInfo box, sections on members, related and collabs etc. was created specifically to show on the artist page, who worked with who (remixed, played Bass, Kazoo, sang etc.)

Now relationships come in many flavours, members of a band are related, so we have past & present members section, collab is for the usual collab (artist X & artist Y get together for a session and lay some art down in the studio). And the Related section as well, when it is a bit fuzzy (example Diana Krall and husband Elvis Costello, Or Randy Bachman and son Tal Bachman, Or Bob Dylan & son Jakob, so not exactly artistic rel, but a notable relationship nevertheless. Also for non collab, or when we know there is a relationship but haven't completely figured it out yet.

  • Now if certain bits can be indicated in the song or album page (e.g. producer zix indicated on the album page of jane the singer as the studio wizard, or a featured axeman/vocalist indicated in the SongHeader in fa)...Those bits have a legitimate place on the Artist and producer's artist Info box as well, this way we can look at an artist page and see what things s/he has been up to without looking at every album and song page of him etc.
  • Each of these artists entered in the rel or collab section can be further clarified by another piece of text, see Joe Satriani's AIBox. Essentially the AIBox should end up being a concise map/diagram of what the artist has done in her/his life, to the extent that editors are willing to dig up and lay down on the page. Whew!
  • Artist aliases: aliases of the artist (Joe's is just the one Satch, and in his case insignificant, as he has not released any work as satch) but some artists have a truckload of aliases and have actual releases under those aliases (see this guy), and mark my words:Artist aliases are not related artists of the aliased artist, not at all! That last artist I mentioned had declared his own aliases as Related Artists and had made a template of his own aliases to that effect, but those are all his own self! In fact he has gone the extra mile and has collaborated with his own alias on some release, I guess to fool the taxman!
  • And another bit that you noticed on my talk page being discussed with Senv, All diff names (aliases) that an artist may have released works under, will have to be compiled in one artist page (Sam/Leslie Philips) / (CatStevens/Yusuf Islam)

In conclusion, your edit of the AIBox of Jacques Lu Cont is highly questionable and needs to be R'd! No rush... hth!ES (talk) 16:34, December 12, 2014 (UTC)

@ES: while writing such a big essay, dedicated to ai, you could mention one more trifle: "members of the group itself should only be listed in the members or fmembers section, not in related (even if their solo career has overshadowed their career with the group)". No rush... --Senvaikis (talk) 18:08, December 12, 2014 (UTC)
@Senv: Thankfully all AIBöxen I have worked on are Green, Even Joe's :) (incomplete & under construction) The documentation that I cannot find so easily is the official definition of an Artist ;) ES (talk) 20:52, December 12, 2014 (UTC)
I first want to make clear why I made the edit: I knew the artist had aliases (as I just read the musicbrainz/wiki page), so I wanted them to see listed on his artist page. I browsed said help page Help:Contents/Editing/Formatting/Artists, didn't find anything about aliases, so I thought "lets put them at least under related artists". Okay, that's wrong apparently. "Members/fmembers" felt strange as well (I read that Senvaikis Smile )Can you tell me a temporary solution of how to link aliases to the mainpage of an artist without merging them? Because that was my simple goal here Smile Yes, I read the discussion about merging, but I won't go and merge every alias into to main page myself. Should I simply put mergeto's/from's with description on such pages?
Now to the second point: I know Jacques Lu Cont, Thin White Duke and Les Rythmes Digitales solely as remixer. And being only a remixer of few songs of an artist wouldn't justify to put them in related artists, imho! Because when you get into electronic genres it would become absurd.
What I meant with my editing note [1] was: Put the remixed songs on the artist page, say for Jacques Lu Cont: Create section "Remixes", put songs there, like: "Song A (Jacques Lu Cont remix) by Madonna" - that would be enough credit for me if the artist would be just an remixer.
Now: I read the wiki article about him only afterwards (my bad!), which explains that he's also a producer of some albums for Madonna, etc. Well that explains a lot and it makes sense to have them listed under related artists, because the are related due their work as you explained above.
So in the end, for the second point, what I want to know for future edits is:
Does having done a remix for an artist justify to put him in related artists? To quote from the help page (regarding related): "For both groups and solo artists, this may include:
  • Other groups or solo artists that have worked or collaborated closely with the group or solo artist
  • Artists who are relatives of the solo artist or a member of the group"
- In my opinion, no it doesn't.
I will of course undo my edit now. I didn't have time earlier to reply with an essay Wink, too and to undo, sorry.
Greetings, --Fassbrause (talk) 22:27, December 12, 2014 (UTC)
don't bother undo or revert anything, try clarifying it beyond where it was when u saw the page, I worked on thousands of AI boxes and NOT one is complete, not even Golden Pink Floyd's AI is complete (where is Snowy White & Andy Fairweather Low?! to name just 2) Every time I come across an AI i worked on previously, I need to re re-edit it. Please note that it is not required that AI be filled (at green level anyway), or even to what extent it be filled. My essay (not thesis ;) is a justification of how I edit AIBox, may not fully conform to policy/dogma; the aim is clarifying who is who and where did they do what with whom. Yes some may become long, if you don't want to indicate everything, don't bother, but if somebody else did, don't remove it. And soorpreez 4 Senv, yes I make mistakes too, fix it if you care. I wanna know who is an artist still!! 7 years after arrival...
As long as any confusion about aliases has been clarified on this page, I call that progress! I think eventually we'll have a collapsible AIBox (۶ stop lurking!), so it's length & depth won't scare the newbies. Some session musicians who eventually put a solo album out and end up with a page here e.g.Nathan East (worked with Joe too!) will end up with massive AI boxes, far beyond any young buck remixer. C'est lavie :) I'llbe working on Nathan's AI 4sure! ES (talk) 23:10, December 12, 2014 (UTC)
Okay, okay, okay, thanks for clarifying. Yeah, I like to keep related lists rather shorter than longer. I mean, it's also my bad, I should just have taken a closer look at the bottom of a page I often edit to find a simple solution for now of how to indicate aliases... Have a nice evening, --Fassbrause (talk) 23:26, December 12, 2014 (UTC)
