Paul Valdemar Horsdal, AKA 'Valdy', is a Canadian folk musician whose solo career began in the early 1970s. Valdy's place in the heart of Canadian folk music is rivalled only by that of Gordon Lightfoot. Valdy is possibly best known for "Rock and Roll Song", his first mainstream single released in mid-1972, but he scored lots of hits in the early 70s : "Yes I Can" "Renaissance" "A Good Song" "Peter and Lou" "Dirty Old Man" "The Simple Life" "Country Man."

In this writer's opinion Ulrich brought as much talent to the table as the rest of the group combined You only need hear her singing "Flying (often mistakenly called "Fear of Flying," because that particular phrase - "fear of flying" - is repeated throughout the lyric."Fear of Flying" is a tune that has been recorded and covered by numerous other artists unrelated to The Hometown Band.)

Ulrich's vocal signature is a soaring range and an unearthly soulfulness, in the style of a Joan Baez.

You're gonna weep when you hear Ulrich soloing, "Flying," I guarantee it!

Valdy lives on a farm on the Gulf Coast island, Saltspring Island.Saltspring Island is a celebrated artists' haven. Ulrich is thought also to live on another Gulf Coast island, Bowen Island, but she is reclusive. Ulrich survived a knife attack by a stranger in the 80s and since that time she she has kept a lower profile. The writer found himself sitting right next to Shari Ulrich once, in a move theatre in Vancouver. It was shortly after the knife attack, so I was surprised to see her there. At the end of the movie I leaned over and just whishpered "Ms. Ulrich, thanks very much for the music". She very quietly replied "Thank-you." --Mimbyus (talk) 17:16, September 21, 2012 (UTC)

FLYING

Help me out of this space
I’m crying
And I don’t want to lose in the race
Everything we do
Is just another trying
And some never lose
Their fear of flying

The music in those nightclubs
Seldom satisfies my need
For a simple song
The world can sing along
Straight from the heart
Give me my part

Help me out of this space
I’m crying
And I don’t want to lose in the race
Everything we do
Is just another trying
And some never lose
Their fear of flying

I went to hear my friends
Play away the night
And I listened so carefully
You know, the tunes were hot
And the people dancing
But oh, won’t you play one for me
Here we go
Touch my soul

Help me out of this space
I’m crying
And I don’t want to lose in the race
Everything we do
Is just another trying
And some never lose
Their fear of flying
