Song: "Chacarron Macarron" by El Chombo
Nominated by: 173.64.120.248
Reason: Too often we get caught up in the meaning of the lyrics, while failing to notice the musical context of those lyrics. This song has a bunch of nonsense lyrics, but they actually do have meaning and function within the song. The way that each of these "words" is pronounced signifies a certain meaning. The chorus is whimsical, silly, and slurred, while other parts of the song have more edge to them and provide rhythm.

It's interesting to see that although the lyrics don't have any dictionary meaning, people who listen to the song largely experience the vocals the same way, which says something about how we perceive music. If you take away the literal meanings of the words, it still conveys the same music idea. So then, how important are lyrics really?

Song: "Blue Tail Fly" by Pete Seeger
Nominated by: 99.189.173.42
Reason: I nominate this song because when I proposed to sing it at a local event, as you can well imagine, I got a great ballyhoo in response. "That's a racist minstrel song making fun of a poor slave." To wit, I responded, "If it was good enough for Pete Seeger, who steadfastly opposed racism it is good enough for me. The song is a tribute to a young slave lad who bravely and cunningly put an end to his master's torment for once and for all without as much as laying a finger on him. It was all the fault of the nasty little blue tail fly as so inscribed on the master's tombstone." MY response quelled the dissent and so I will sing this very entertaining American Tradition folk song loud and strong.
