Bachata (or Merengue) is the traditional folk music of the Dominican Republic; in its classic form is played on accordion, saxophone, box bass, guayo (a metal scraper), and two-ended tambora drum. Today, the music is more familiar in its big band form, a dance music close to salsa; though now dominated by saxophone, the rhythms remain unchanged, with a simple and monotonous 1-2-3-4 beat.
