Kanji

English Translation

The boy who chases after the one-eyed rabbit
Passes over the back-yard fence
And gets lost in the forest

The sprites who fly about the light filtering through the trees,
The multi-coloured flowers,
They dazzle his eyes

In a cluster of poison mushrooms
That are dangerous to the touch
He laughs, and lies down

Entangled in the ivy leaves,
Caught by the oak roots,
His legs have slipped

The sky shatters
And atop the mosses,
It falls and softly amasses
With shining spores on his bare chest

The boy is a reclined in a dream,
Forgetting
About the days that should have gone on
But that is not a bad thing

The rabbit peeks at him with a brilliant red eye
The sheep sneaks up on him on three legs
The depths of the forest are frightening but so captivatingly lush
Even if he has to lose something
He won’t run out

Let us go even further and even deeper,
Since we’ve really come to like you
Your mama’s not here but you’re not alone
There’s nobody here who will hit you

Let’s drink tea made from melted honeybees and poppies
Let’s eat delicious pie stuffed with robins

Pretty butterflies
Are coming to take it

Your good heart

A girl who chases after the staggering sheep
Soiling her white shoes
Has gotten into the forest

Without a single cloud of gloom on her happy cheeks
As if springing wings,
She can go anywhere

Attaching to the gentle wind
Let’s go give her a nice welcome
On the other side of the cliff

Even when the curtains fall
The profound darkness
Doesn’t seem to be felt by her
